Sophomore lefty Dillon Peters allowed only two runs in seven innings Sunday while five players recorded two hits each as the NR/No. 24 Texas Longhorns earned a 6-3 win over the Sacramento State Hornets. The Longhorns recorded 12 hits on the afternoon to win the weekend series in front of 5,667 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Peters (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout for Texas (2-1). Matt Moynihan, Taylor Stell, Mark Payton, C.J Hinojosa and Weston Hall had two hits apiece. Payton finished the weekend 7-for-12 (.583) at the plate while Hinojosa was 6-for-11 (.545) for the three games. Texas hit .347 as a team with seven stolen bases.
Sacramento State (1-2) recorded two solo homers on the afternoon with David Del Grande getting one of them in a 2-for-4 performance. Zach Morgan (0-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs on six hits in three innings.
The Hornets posted the first run of the game in the top of the first as Rhys Hoskins drove in Nathan Lukes, who was hit by a pitch on the first ball of the game.
UT started strong, driving in runs during the first four innings of the game. Stell started off the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle and a steal at second. Payton drove in Stell on a base hit to post the Longhorns? first run of the game.
Hinojosa, who doubled to left field during his first at-bat, was the second to cross home on an RBI base hit from Hall. Stell induced a sacrifice bunt to drive in Hall in the bottom of the second to bring Texas to a 3-1 lead.
The Longhorns extended their lead to a 5-1 margin with a run in the third and fourth innings. Payton, who posted the first triple of the season, was driven in during the third inning on an RBI from Madison Carter. Hall made it home in the fifth after a base hit and steal at second.
