Windows RT to come with Outlook app starting with Windows 8.1 update

We weren't expecting Microsoft to make too many announcements here at Computex -- it's got Build coming up, after all -- but it did drop a little bit of news. The company just confirmed that Windows RT tablets will come with an Outlook app pre-installed starting with the Windows 8.1 update. Not much more to share today -- we already knew Windows 8.1 would arrive in preview on June 26th -- but hopefully we'll learn more at the Build developer conference in a few weeks. After all, as much as Microsoft has already revealed about Windows 8.1, it's said very little about RT, specifically.

How honesty spun Zipcar back around - Business Management Daily

In 2000, Robin Chase founded Zipcar in Cambridge, Mass. The car-sharing service was an instant hit; within three months, the firm had 400 members.

Chase was about to secure $1.3 million in new funding to grow the business when she crunched the numbers and realized her business model was seriously flawed. She had miscalculated the rental rate that members pay to use the company?s cars, and as a result Zipcar wasn?t charging enough to stay in business.

Her initial reaction was fear and dismay. She shut the door and cried, thinking, ?I?m selling a lie.? Examining the numbers a few hours later, she decided to try to save the company by raising prices.

Some Zipcar staffers worried that raising rental rates would infuriate the 400 people who had signed up. But Chase knew it was her best option, so she emailed every Zipcar customer and confessed her error, and announced a 25% price increase.

?I remember I pushed the Send button on the email that evening,? she says. ?I walked into work the next morning with such dread.?

To her delight, 19 of the 21 replies that morning were positive. They agreed to the higher price while praising Zipcar?s service.

Chase called the two others who were angry, apologizing and explaining that Zipcar could not survive without a price hike. Neither customer quit.

Chase?s gambit paid off. In January 2013, Avis agreed to buy Zipcar for $491 million.

RFK: What we lost, what we learned

By Jeff Greenfield

He has been gone longer than he was alive. When he was killed 45 years ago on June 6, just after winning the California presidential primary, Robert Kennedy was 42 years old.

Because I worked on that campaign, I?ve been asked the same questions over and over: Could he have been nominated? Could he have been elected? Could he have made a real difference had he won?

After four decades of brushing the questions aside??Who knows???I tried to answer them in a detailed narrative. If you want one version of how Kennedy might have won in Chicago, how he might have beaten Nixon and what he might have tried to do, you can find it in my ?what-if?? book, ?Then Everything Changed.?
???
Of course, it?s just as possible to imagine Kennedy losing the nomination?Hubert Humphrey had most of the big nonprimary states?or losing to Nixon in November. (Maybe in a decade or so, Robert Caro will tell us what LBJ would have tried to do to Bobby.)

For me, the real loss does not lie in the realm of speculation. We know what we lost: The voice and vision of a still-young man with an extraordinary?perhaps unique?understanding of the possibilities and limits of public action.
???
By the time he ran for president, Kennedy had spent almost three years at the very center of power, as attorney general and (much more important) as President John F. Kennedy?s closest confidant. He had learned lessons that few aspirants to the White House ever get to learn: the way ?experts? may be ignorant; the way certainties offered to a president may be dead wrong; and the way untested assumptions can lead to disaster.

Some of these lessons came at the cost of humility. John and Robert Kennedy brought no small measure of arrogance to the presidency. The efforts to subvert Castro?s regime in Cuba (possibly including assassination), the embrace of counter-insurgency in Vietnam and the failure to understand how to deal with Congress cost the Kennedy administration heavily.

The crucial point here is that Robert Kennedy had learned from these mistakes. (One of his favorite quotes, from Aeschylus, says, ?God calls men to a heavy reckoning for overweening pride.?) At the point when most powerful people are setting out to write their memoirs, he found himself suddenly, violently thrown from power with the death of his brother?which meant that he found himself outside the corridors of power, with full knowledge of what went on inside. It meant, for instance, that he knew that passing a bill and spending money did not necessarily make things better. It meant he understood how structural, institutional weaknesses could undermine good intentions. (My first day on his Senate staff, I went to a hearing on the then-new federal aid to education law. ?What is happening with the money?? he wanted to know. Why is it then, he asked, ?whenever I go into a ghetto, the two things people hate most are the public welfare system and the public education system??)

He was, in other words, a public figure challenging orthodox liberalism at the very moment of its postwar peak and raising radical questions about what we were doing for the least of us. Decades before Newt Gingrich suggested that school kids could work (as janitors, of course, since Gingrich was pandering to a very conservative base), Kennedy was suggesting that high school kids might be let out of school a few hours a week to work: to earn money, learn a trade, maybe find an appetite for a profession. That?s why in my alternate history, I imagined him in a major fight with the teachers? unions.

That?s what we lost: Not necessarily a president, but a 42-year-old man who should have decades more to use what he had learned in helping shape the public policy of his time.

Interleukin 17F level and interferon beta response in patients with multiple sclerosis

June 3, 2013 ? A study by Hans-Peter Hartung, M.D., of Heinrich-Heine-Universit?t, D?sseldoft, Germany, and colleagues examines the association between IL-17F and treatment response to interferon beta-1b among patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. (Online First)

Serum samples were analyzed with an immunoassay from 239 randomly selected patients treated with interferon beta-1b, 250 micrograms, for at least 2 years in the Betaferon Efficacy Yielding Outcomes of a New Dose Study. Researchers measured the levels of IL-17F at baseline and month 6, as well as the difference between the IL-17F levels at month 6 and baseline were compared between: (1) patients with less disease activity versus more disease activity; (2) patients with no disease activity versus some disease activity; and (3) responders versus nonresponders.

According to study results, levels of IL-17F measured at baseline and month 6 did not correlate with lack of response to treatment after 2 years using clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) criteria. Relapses and new lesions on MRI were not associated with pretreatment serum IL-17F levels. When patients with neutralizing antibodies were excluded, the results did not change.

"We found that serum concentrations of IL-17F alone did not predict response to interferon beta-1b therapy in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis." The study concludes, "Given the multifaceted pathophysiology associated with disease progression and response to treatment by patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, using extreme patient cohorts in combination with immune-based biomarker signatures may actually be the most efficient way of initially identifying response markers."

Being the Breadwinner is Not the Epitome of Fatherhood - Raising ...

We have all read and heard about the controversies surrounding the stay-at-home mom versus the working-mom versus the know-it-all-single-woman who thinks she knows everything even though she has never had a longterm relationship, marriage or given birth to any children.(HERE HERE) But now we have a new and rather inane controversy? effecting the male members of our society. Apparently new statistics have come out that for a large portion of households, the women are the major breadwinners.? Watch HERE. This seems to have caused some rather neanderthal heads to explode and accuse society of going to hell in a handbasket. HERE

I do understand that we have 24/7 news channels that need to have new topics to discuss on an hourly basis, but in truth there are real issues around the world to talk about that do not involve some first-world-narcissism. I would suspect that in a large portion of the world, in fact in many American households as well, families are less worried about who brings home the bacon as opposed to them actually being afraid that there will not be any bacon in the house at all.

If you also thought this nonsense ended with the news channels you are wrong. Here, Here, Here, Here, Here, Here, Here

Sadly what has been lost in the hullabaloo about money and worth in our society is just what exactly is the job of being a father?? What does fatherhood actually entail? What actually makes a male a good father?

Is it the size of the paycheck? If that were so I would submit then, that Bernie Madoff was probably a really good dad, even though he ended up causing such trauma for his family that one of his sons committed suicide. The problem with society and so many of our cultural norms is that we are judged not by the content of our character but by the size of our bank balance and paycheck.

Here, then, is my list of dos for being a good father:

* Actually being available when your child needs you.
* Making certain that whatever your child throws at you you deflect it and come back looking for more.
* Patience, understanding and caring about the human being(s) you helped bring into the world before you care about anything else, especially yourself.
* Compassion, teaching your child to care about others.
* Competence, showing your child that whatever they do, they do to the best of their ability.
* Kindness.
* Respect for women. It is essential that real men teach their sons what it means to be in a respectful, mutually fulfilling relationship.
* Role modeling. Men need to show and teach their sons how to be good, kind and gentle people to those around them.
* Ethics and morals are a major aspect of being a real man. There are rights and wrongs in this world. It is essential that men teach their sons that the stronger you are the more ethical a person you will become.
* Not being condescending towards others.
* Laughing with your child.
* Finding mutual interests, or if there are none, supporting what your child likes to do.
* Hugging your child or crying with them when necessary.
* Caring for your child when they are sick.
* Planning for your child's future.
* Educating your child (through graduate school at least).
* Teaching how to clean a house as well as how to rebuild a car motor.
* Knowing that your child is not an extension of you, a golden adornment, but a person in their own right.
* Teaching the right way to defend their beliefs.
* Modeling honor, and duty.
* Understanding that if your child has issues and/or special needs it makes them no less important and no less a person to be loved.

Now where did I learn what it means to be a good father. Definitely from my own dad and watching the hubby help me raise our two boys as well. Fatherhood, like motherhood, is not an easy gig. It takes time, energy, patience and above all selflessness.

Many lament that the breakdown of the marriage has caused this dearth of fatherhood. But simply because a marriage fails or was never in the works, does not mean a man cannot be a good father. Parenthood is divorced from the adult relationship that brought the child into the world. Adult relationship issues have no bearing, or should have no bearing, on raising the child. This is about responsible parenting, nothing more and definitely nothing less.

Responsibility is also something I teach my own sons. Responsibility in life includes the choices you make. If you choose to have sex and are not ready to be a parent use birth control. If the girl gets pregnant its up to her if you become a father or not. If she chooses fatherhood then your obligation to that child is for the rest of your life. So think before you act and be certain the person you sleep with is someone you would want to be the mother of your children.

In the end, it does not mean a man is less than a man if his wife or the woman in his life earns a bigger paycheck. Sometimes that is the necessary reality that people have to live with, especially since the downturn in the economy. Gender roles and the rules are changing in the world. What should also change is the basis upon which we measure a person's worth in this world. What a person adds to the world "ethically, morally, emotionally and spiritually" is what is most important. Not how much money they earn so they can buy crap.

Remember in the end (who goes to an office, which parent if any stays home with the children, or who is the top breadwinner) you need to figure out what is best for your family and ultimately what makes you both good parents.

Elise

P.S.? Yes, it is a fact that most women who are the breadwinners are in single family homes without male financial support of any kind (deadbeat dads abound). There is no male role model for the children and no positive male influence. But that is also the choice in many cases of the mother and/or an absent father who does not assert his parental role or rights. The effects on the children have been studied and I can say these studies are not encouraging. Sadly it is also a different discussion for another day.

Quakes kill 2 in Taiwan, injure 33 in Philippines

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? A strong earthquake jolted Taiwan on Sunday, killing two people and injuring at least 21 others and causing panicked shoppers to rush out of a shaking multi-story department store, officials said.

Another earthquake jolted the southern Philippines late Saturday, injuring at least 33 people and damaging more than 140 houses.

The tremor that hit Taiwan on Sunday afternoon was felt all over the island, but most severely in the central and southern regions. The magnitude-6.3 quake's epicenter was near Jenai township in Nantou County in central Taiwan, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Taipei, the Central Weather Bureau said.

In Mountain Ali in the southern part of the island, a man was killed by a rockslide while driving a car on a mountain road, the Taiwan Fire Agency said in a statement. Another man was killed by a falling rock when he was working at a farm in Chushan, near the epicenter.

Rockslides at a scenic mountainous area near the epicenter injured several people, the agency said. In all, 21 people were injured by the earthquake, many by fallen objects.

Workers removed fallen rocks and repaired a damaged mountain road in Nantou, allowing more than 100 stranded tourists to pass.

Shoppers screamed and ran out of a 12-story department store that shook violently for nearly a minute, TV stations reported from the central city of Taichung. Households elsewhere in central Taiwan reported cracks on the walls or ceilings falling, the reports said.

The Central Weather Bureau said the tremor had a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.5.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. Nantou is near the epicenter of a magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck Taiwan in 1999 and killed more than 2,300 people.

In the southern Philippines, a magnitude-5.7 earthquake rattled North Cotabato province and nearby areas late Saturday as people slept, damaging more than 140 houses and several school buildings and setting off a landslide that partially blocked a road with boulders, officials said.

At least 33 people, including children, were injured by collapsed walls and falling debris in the hard-hit North Cotabato villages of Kimadzil and Kibugtongan, said Hermes Daquipa, a Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology official who joined a government team that surveyed the hilly villages.

The quake, which was set off by the movement of a nearby fault, damaged the approaches to two bridges and concrete pipes that cut off water supply to the two villages. Some of the damaged school buildings will not be able to be used for Monday's resumption of classes after a summer break for safety reasons, North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Tolentino-Mendoza said.

Many residents remained jittery Sunday because of continuing aftershocks, said Mendoza, who added that she scrambled out of her home like other villagers when the ground started to shake and objects fell from shelves.

"It's a big relief that no motorist was passing through our highway when boulders rolled down from the mountainside," she said.

The Philippine archipelago is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. A magnitude-7.7 quake killed nearly 2,000 people on the northern island of Luzon in 1990.
