Alienware X51 gaming PC now available with Ubuntu, starts at $600

Alienware X51 now available with Ubuntu

While the Alienware X51 has been slated by Valve as a currently available Steambox, consumers still have to get rid of that pesky Windows to install the Linux-driven platform. As we've seen with the Razer Edge, a Windows 8-powered gaming system just doesn't work well for living rooms because it still needs an interface that's not a game controller. Fortunately, that barrier is slowly evaporating as the Dell-owned commodity is now providing Ubuntu as an OS option for the X51, paving the way for easier Steambox modification in the future.

It'll come with Linux-friendly drivers from NVIDIA right out of the box, and you can of course install Steam for Linux on it from the get-go. As a reminder, the X51 is available in Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 models, and can be upgraded to 8GB of RAM with 1TB of storage, with either a NVIDIA GeForce GT545 or a GTX 555 card. Features include HDMI 1.4, eight USB ports (six are 2.0 while two are 3.0), digital 7.1 surround sound, on-board WiFi and gigabit Ethernet. Pricing for the base Ubuntu model is $599, which is about $100 less than its Windows counterpart.

Connecticut lawmakers set to vote on tough gun measure

By Ebong Udoma

HARTFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Connecticut state senators debated a bill on Wednesday to regulate guns that supporters describe as one of the toughest in the United States, as both chambers of the state's legislature prepared to vote on the measure later in the day.

The legislation was proposed in the wake of the December school shooting in Newtown that left 20 first-graders and six adults dead. The bill would require background checks for private gun sales and include a ban on the sale high-capacity ammunition clips of the kind used in the Newtown shooting.

"The tragedy in Newtown deserves a powerful response," said Senate President Donald Williams, a Democrat, during debate. He urged his colleagues to support the bill. "This bill contains the first in the nation dangerous weapons registry," he said.

Opponents say the bill infringes the rights to gun ownership protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

"At the end of the day, making it more onerous on law-abiding citizens in our state is not the solution," Senator John Kissel, a Republican, said on Wednesday, drawing applause from gun rights advocates in the gallery.

Under the legislation, owners of existing clips capable of holding 10 or more bullets would be required to register them with the state. Owning an unregistered high-capacity clip would become a felony offense as of January 1.

The shooter in the December attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School used high-capacity clips holding 30 bullets, which allowed him to shoot 154 rounds in less than five minutes.

The House and the Senate are expected to pass the measure. Both chambers are controlled by Democrats, with 99 Democrats and 52 Republicans in the House, and 22 Democrats and 14 Republicans in the Senate.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, a Democrat, had pushed for passage of the law and is expected to sign it.

The House, as of late afternoon, had not yet begun its debate.

The measure would also expand the number of weapons covered by Connecticut's assault weapons ban and establishes a $15 million fund to help schools improve security infrastructure.

Visualized: Seattle Mariners unveil 'largest screen in Major League Baseball'

Seattle Mariners buy new HDTV, invite friends over for a game

This week, the Seattle Mariners showed off a new 3,840 x 1,080, surface-mount LED display at Safeco Field -- one the team's PR department touts as the "largest in Major League Baseball and among the largest in all of sports." At 201.5 feet wide by 56.7 feet tall, its surface area of 11,425 square feet places it behind massive screens at Charlotte Motor Speedway (16,000 square feet) and Cowboys Stadium (11,520 square feet). That's good enough, the team said, to rank as the third-largest sports-venue display in North America and surpasses Kauffman Stadium's HD scoreboard as the largest in baseball. Roughly 1,200 individual panels make up the screen, offering a total of 4,147,200 pixels -- more pixels than the 2.6-megapixel Cowboys Stadium display, the team pointed out.

To feed their new HD beast, the team revamped its video control room and upgraded to high-def cameras throughout the stadium. A 64-bit operating system called VisionSOFT allows the team to mix in multiple video sources, from in-house animations and HD video feeds to out-of-town footage from broadcast partners. All told, the HD upgrade required about 3,000 each feet of power, video coax and Cat5 cables. Along with showing ads, stats and replays, the team will take advantage of the HD resolution to display social media updates from fans during games via Twitter, Google+ and other sources.

You can check out more shots of the new screen in action after the break.

Yu Darvish loses perfect game with 2 outs in 9th

HOUSTON (AP) ? Yu Darvish was one out from a perfect game when Marwin Gonzalez grounded a clean single through the pitcher's legs, and the Texas Rangers beat the Houston Astros 7-0 on Tuesday night.

The celebrated right-hander from Japan struck out a career-high 14 and appeared to be in complete control before Gonzalez smacked the first pitch up the middle. Darvish was unable to get his glove down in time and the ball skittered into center field well beyond a desperate dive by shortstop Elvis Andrus.

Darvish smiled and extended his arms ? almost like, "Oh well, it happens." Several disappointed fans put their hands on their heads as Texas infielders came to the mound and manager Ron Washington joined them.

Washington patted Darvish on the chest and then signaled for a reliever. A crowd of 22,673 that included plenty of Rangers fans cheered Darvish as he walked off after 111 pitches. He stopped and tipped his cap before getting high-fives from teammates in the dugout.

He sat on the bench to watch the rest of the game, then joined the handshake line after the final out.

Darvish became the first pitcher to lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning since Armando Galarraga on June 2, 2010. Of course, the Detroit pitcher was denied only because of an infamous missed call at first base by umpire Jim Joyce, who later admitted he blew the play.

On the second full day of the major league season, Darvish nearly picked up right where baseball left off last year, when there were a record three perfect games, thrown by Philip Humber, Matt Cain and Felix Hernandez.

Darvish's 14 strikeouts matched a Minute Maid Park record and were the most by a Rangers pitcher since Hall of Famer and current team CEO Nolan Ryan had 14 in July 1991 against the Angels.

Darvish arrived in the majors last year with much fanfare, having already been a five-time All-Star and two-time MVP in Japan. The Rangers paid more than $107 million to get him for five seasons.

The 6-foot-5 righty quickly settled in with Texas, becoming an All-Star last year on the way to going 16-9 with 221 strikeouts. He also once flirted with perfection, retiring the first 17 batters at Kansas City on Sept. 3.

If Darvish had been able to finish the job Tuesday, it would have been the earliest perfecto in history.

He didn't really need a dazzling play from his defense as he shut down the Astros and chased the 24th perfect game in big league history ? including the one Don Larsen tossed in the 1956 World Series, and two in 1880.

It was almost the second time in 10 months the overmatched Astros failed to put a runner on base. Cain's perfect game for the World Series champion San Francisco Giants came against Houston on June 13 last year.

Many expect the Astros to be the worst team in the majors this year, after two straight 100-loss seasons and a major league-low payroll of just under $22 million. But they cruised to an 8-2 win over Texas in the major league opener and their American League debut Sunday night.

The 26-year-old Darvish carried over a strong showing in spring training this year into near perfection in his first regular-season start. The Astros looked totally lost against him, often taking wild swings at breaking balls that bounced.

With the crowd on its feet and a mixture of cheers and "Yuuus" filling Minute Maid Park, Chris Carter took Darvish to a full count before striking out on the ninth pitch of the at-bat for the first out of the eighth inning.

Rick Ankiel followed by striking out and Justin Maxwell hit an easy grounder to second baseman Ian Kinsler.

Darvish looked toward the sky for a couple of seconds before retreating to the dugout.

He began the ninth by getting two easy groundouts before Gonzalez ruined his bid for perfection. The 24-year-old Gonzalez made his big league debut last year, hitting .234 in 80 games for Houston.

Darvish, who played seven professional seasons in Japan before joining the Rangers, set rookie franchise records for wins (16) and strikeouts (221) last season. He finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind winner Mike Trout and Oakland outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

The win gives Darvish five straight regular-season victories dating to last season. He took the loss in the Rangers' 5-1 defeat to Baltimore in the AL wild-card game last year.

Using his dizzying array of pitches, including a fastball that topped out at 97 mph, a slider, and 95 mph cutters, Darvish bedeviled the mostly inexperienced Houston hitters.

Darvish (1-0) sailed through the first four innings, striking out nine, including the side in the second and fourth.

Carter hit a long fly that looked as though it could be gone before David Murphy caught it just in front of the wall in left-center for the first out of the fifth. First baseman Mitch Moreland made a nice catch on a liner by Ankiel for the second out before Darvish fanned Maxwell on three pitches to end the inning.

Michael Kirkman relieved Darvish after Gonzalez's hit. Jose Altuve followed with a single before Kirkman fanned pinch-hitter J.D. Martinez to end it.

Darvish has never thrown a complete game in the majors.

Lucas Harrell (0-1), who was Houston's most successful starter a year ago with 11 wins, allowed six hits and one run with four strikeouts in six innings.

Lance Berkman had a run-scoring single in the third against his former team. He finished with three hits and two RBIs.

Kinsler hit a two-run homer off Rhiner Cruz in the seventh to make it 3-0. Texas added two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.

NOTES: The last no-hitter by a Rangers pitcher was Kenny Rogers' perfect game against the Angels on July 28, 1994. ... Berkman extended his hitting streak at Minute Maid Park to 14 games dating to July 26, 2010. That includes his last three home games with the Astros and 11 appearances as an opposing player with St. Louis and Texas. ... These teams wrap up the series Wednesday when Humber makes his Astros debut against Texas RHP Alexi Ogando.

Two more Democrats enter race to succeed longtime Boston mayor

By Scott Malone

BOSTON (Reuters) - Two Democrats jumped into the race to succeed Boston's longest-serving mayor on Tuesday, the first to declare their interest in succeeding Thomas Menino since he told the city last week that he would not run for an unprecedented sixth term.

State Representative Martin Walsh and City Councilor Felix Arroyo said on Tuesday they were interested in the seat, joining Councilor John Connolly, a former school teacher who began his campaign in February, the one candidate to do so before Menino said he would leave office.

"I've made my mind up," Walsh, who has served in the statehouse since 1997, told the Boston Herald. "I'm running for mayor."

Walsh did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Arroyo told supporters in a fundraising letter sent on Tuesday, "I am seriously considering running for mayor of Boston."

Incumbent mayors are rarely unseated in Boston, Menino got the job in July 1993 when his predecessor was made U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, and observers expect a large number of candidates to enter the race.

Candidates have until May 13 to officially declare their interest and will face an open September 24 primary, with the two top vote-getters facing off in the November 5 general election.

Boston voters face a busier-than-usual election season this year, with five candidates currently vying for the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Secretary of State John Kerry.

In that race, voters will pick a Democratic and a Republican candidate on April 30, with a special election to follow on June 25. Early polls have shown U.S. Representative Edward Markey with a leading position among Democrats and former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan leading among Republicans.

The No. 2 Democrat in the field, U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch, late last week batted away questions that he would drop out to run for mayor, saying he remained focused on the Senate contest.
